Great IT Business Opportunities for Colombia

Compared to the Philippines and India, , Colombia is more accessible than other economies in offering traditional BPO services. It also notes that the country is connected by five submarine cables capable of delivering more than 550 Gbps for the broadband service the country requires.

Construction of new fiber optic rings throughout the country is in progress, and will allow connecting 96% of the territory by 2014. The journal quotes PROCOLOMBIA in the claim that six Colombian regions have the potential to support successful software growth, business outsourcing, or information technology corporate services, including the urban areas of Bogota and Medellin, the central areas in Cali, Bucaramanga, and the Coffee Cultural Landscape, as well as the north of Barranquilla.

Colombia has success stories with some of the largest companies in the fields of information technology and business outsourcing, such as IBM, Hewlett-Packard, and Eaton, among others.

Colombia is working with Canada to foster an increased investment between both countries to leverage the currently valid Free Trade Agreement. An article by IT Business notes how PROCOLOMBIA indicates that Canada represents 3.6% of investment in Colombia with a total accumulated investment of 1.3 billion dollars between 2000 and 2010. Also worthy of mention is the fact that several high-tech companies located in Bogota, like ZIO Studios, Zemoga, and Globant, already have transnational clients.
