Colombia has 'world class' potential for renewable energy sources

The Colombian Association of Renewable Energies (SER Colombia), which brings together 54 companies related to the generation of non-conventional renewable energy sources has gathered evidence favoring the complementarity and stability, of Colombia's energy generation systems, since 2016.

"Colombia has world-class potential in wind and solar energy," SER executive director Alejandro Lucio said. "This sector offers important investment opportunities for companies wishing to participate in Colombia's energy matrix."

"Renewable energy is extremely competitive," commercial director Jan Daniel said. "Gas and oil are finite. We don't know how long they will last but, eventually, they will come to an end."

Energy in Colombia

Unlike traditional energy sources in Colombia, non-conventional energy sources offer an investment alternative for companies interested in the diversification of the energy matrix. Colombia, thanks to its climatic conditions and geographic positioning, offers the chance to develop solar, wind, biomass, geothermal and tidal energy projects, as well as small hydroelectric power plants.

"La Guajira and other nearby departments have the perfect conditions for investors interested in wind energy production," said Grupo Energia de Bogota president Astrid Alvarez.

Clean energy is the most important asset when it comes to mitigating climate change, Continua Positiva Energia's Country Manager Gabriel Concha said: "When we think about renewable energies, we're thinking about long-term sustainability."

Colombia's potential for renewable energy sources

Colombia enjoys solar radiation throughout the year, especially in departments such as La Guajira, Atlantico, Antioquia and Valle de Cauca. The country's geographic positioning is one of the reasons why it has become an important solar energy generator. "The effect of solar energy lasts up to 12 hours a day, registering some of the highest rates worldwide," ABB Latin America president Ramon Monras said. "Colombia can develop solar solutions, such as parks and farms, which generate energy year around, with greater efficiency than other countries that have solar stations."

Colombia also offers important opportunities for companies interested in wind energy projects. "Our clients have undertaken studies and discovered that not only is there great availability, but the winds in La Guajira are of an exceptionally high quality," Juan Jose Angulo, of Angulo Martinez & Lawyers, said.

Colombia's primary energy producer is hydro-electricity, thanks to its abundance of water, followed by fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal. Thanks to its privileged geographic location and natural wealth, it also has the potential to become a key player in the development and application of alternative technologies. These technologies will not only solve the global energy crisis, they will make an important contribution to environmental protection.
