The Colombian territory is traversed by three mountain ranges, with one of them being the longest on the planet—the Andes. While these natural features contribute to the country's unique beauty, they also pose challenges for land-based transportation.

This situation has significantly boosted the Colombian aeronautical industry. Air transportation has become one of the most viable means of travel within the country. For instance, in January 2023 alone, more than 3 million passengers were transported by air.

Thanks to this development, Colombia not only boasts a substantial number of air passengers each year but has also cultivated an aircraft parts manufacturing industry. This sector has, in turn, contributed to the overall manufacturing industry, which, according to DANE data, recorded exports of US$5,045.3 million in the first half of 2023, indicating a strong and thriving economic sector.

Public and private sector support

The national government has also decided to work for the development of this industry, since it has mentioned the importance of industrializing the Colombian air force and advancing in the construction of both aircraft parts and complete airplanes.

Thanks to this, the country has managed to reach agreements on the production of aircraft parts with large companies such as Airbus. About this agreement German Umaña, Minister of Commerce, stated that:

  • “Is an investment of 300 million euros by Airbus. With this, and with the industry of the Colombian Air Force, they will manufacture the propellers and all the structures of the national industry with a technological disaggregation, a technology transfer, an engineering training and exclusivity to produce this for the world.”

This shows both the growth potential of this industry in Colombia and the confidence that big brands have in investing in the country.

Competitive advantages of the domestic industry

Those interested in investing in aviation sector can count on the following competitive advantages of the country to make their businesses profitable and take advantage of this industry’s growth potential:

  • Colombia has the most active air force in Latin America, which gives it sufficient experience in the industry’s needs.
  • The country has an extensive network of airports, which provides it with an infrastructure related to this sector and the necessary knowledge on the subject.
  • The number of passengers on domestic flights within the country has boosted the domestic industry, as there is a significant demand for aircraft for daily use by citizens.
  • Colombian human talent is an important competitive advantage, as the country has a skilled workforce for both technical tasks and for the design and planning of aircraft parts production, with the potential to build complete airplanes.
  • This is an industry supported by regional clusters and the ANDI Aerospace Committee, which provides institutional backing and facilitates aeronautical investments.

Why invest now

The growing demand for aircraft and the anticipated regional supply shortfall make this a promising growth industry.

Furthermore, new military projects and growing support for high-tech industries are driving aeronautics development. It is in part due to this that major aircraft manufacturing companies have already shown interest in investing in Colombia. This demonstrates confidence in both the industry and the national economy.

Don't miss the opportunity to invest in the aviation market, one of the most exciting and promising industries in Colombia. Learn more about aeronautical investment projects here.
