Fisheries and aquaculture in Colombia have been carried out historically both on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts and in inland waters. Colombia has more than 3,000 km of coastline and exclusive economic zones in the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea that cover more than 800,000 km².

Colombia has more than 700,000 micro-watersheds and more than 20 million hectares of aquatic ecosystems. In addition, it has multiple and diverse marine hydrological ecosystems, fresh and brackish water, and a wide variety of relatively stable climatic conditions, this richness translates into one of the highest biodiversity indexes and the greatest diversity of fish in the planet.

  • High availability of suitable lands for breeding in the Caribbean and Pacific coasts, and mainland.
  • Colombia has one of the best genetic improvement programs for shrimps with continuous participation of the productive sector. Colombia's improved genetic material performs well in intensive and extensive systems.
  • Colombia has a high biodiversity of hydrobiological organisms, as well as freshwater, marine and suitable land that gives great potential for the development of aquaculture.
  • High compliance with government standards, to ensure sustainability of the sector, through criteria for: the selection of the zones, planting systems, fattening and reproduction; respectful with the water, forest and land, avoiding environmental damage and conserving the environment.
  • Research, innovation and development policies and mechanisms generated by the Center for Aquaculture Research (CENIACUA), designed to improve products, production chains, knowledge transfer, genetics and health.

These are some of the reasons to invest in the aquaculture sector in Colombia. Here you can learn in detail about all of these opportunities and more reasons why to make Colombia the chosen destination for your projects.

Colombia has the ideal conditions for the development of forestry projects thanks to the availability of areas, diversity of climates, photosynthesis throughout all year, advances in biotechnology and genetic development and government incentives.

With 17 million suitable hectares for reforestation, scattered over different altitude levels, diversity of tree species, and important developments in the fields of genetics and biotechnology, optimal climatic conditions and tax benefits and incentives, Colombia is perfectly positioned as a destination for forestry investments.

  • Currently only 2.13% is used for 369,440 hectares forest plantations.
  • Technological packages for cultivation of several species of which pine and eucalyptus are for pulp production, sawmilling industries, construction, activated charcoal and boards. Teak, walnut, coffee and Acacia and mangium are used for saw timber and Melina for plywood.
  • Colombia's year round photosynthesis due to its tropical location with high biomass production, produces higher yields for tree species and shorter life cycles.
  • Important biotechnology and genetic development has consolidated a higher quality forestry germplasm production with regards to plant material production.
  • Tax benefits and incentives including an exemption in income tax for new forest plantations and the Forest Incentive Certificate (CIF)

These are only some of the reasons to invest in the Forest sector, we invite you to learn in detail these and more reasons why to choose Colombia as the destination for your projects.

  • 17 million suitable hectares for reforestation distributed over several altitudinal floors. Currently only 1,5 % of the forest potential is used in forest plantations over 350.000 hectares.
  • Technological Packages for the cultivation of several species like pines (P. maximinoi, P. tecunumanii) and Eucalyptuses for the production of bark, lumber industries, construction, activated coal and boards; Teak, coffee Walnut and Acacia Mangium for the wood for lumber and the Melina for plywood and other uses.
  • Year round Photosynthesis on location in the tropics where there is a high production of biomass. Species have a greater yield and a shorter biological cycle, using the Eucalyptus as an example, it can grow up to 30 (m3 / has / year) over 8 years. The climatic advantages permit forestry investment to cultivate plantations of diverse species of pines on the Andean plateau, Pinus caribea in the Orinoco, Eucaliptus grandis in the mid level Andean zone and Teak in the low tropical zone.
  • Important biotechnological and genetic development that has allowed to consolidate a production base of germoplasma forest [1] of high quality with the possibility of harvesting vegetable material.
  • Tributary and incentive Benefits. Tax exemptions on revenue from new forest plantations and the Certificate of Forest Incentive (CIF).

Since 2005 Colombia has established a biofuels policy in order to contribute to the generation of employment, positioning Colombia as a biofuels exporter, diversifying its energy portfolio and promoting the productive development for land use and guaranteeing a sustainable performance.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, Colombia holds the highest yield rate (85.96 ton/he) within the world's largest sugarcane producers surpassing countries such as Brazil (75.34 ton/he), China (70.59 ton/he), and India (67.43 ton/he).

Colombia is one of the largest producers of Biodiesel, reaching 513 thousand tons in 2015.

    • Great amounts of land available: around 7.4 million hectares suitable for biocarburants which does not affect forest biodiversity.
    • The availability of land for agriculture in Colombia is five times higher than in Malaysia, which is the world’s second largest palm oil producer.
    • Colombian Palm oil and sugar cane used to elaborate biofuels have proved the highest yield among the other feedstock used in the world.
    • With 1.2 million tons, Colombia is the largest palm oil producer in Latin America and the fifth worldwide.
    • The local supply still does not supply domestic demand for ethanol and biodiesel. By 2020 it is expected the domestic demand to reach 1,400 million liters of ethanol and 1,200 litters of biodiesel annually.
    • According to the “Life Cycle Analysis 2012” the ethanol produced in Colombia reduces the emission of GHG by 74% and the biodiesel reduces those levels by 83%. (EMPA and The Pontifical Bolivarian University)
